Longitudinally:
Here the box is placed along the ship's hull. In this case the
box does not come so close to the ships centre line and would appear to take up
less space. Although the volume of the box remains the same.
Athwart
ship:
In this arrangement the box is
projected at right angles to the ships hull. In some cases, depending on hull
shape, the box needs to be positioned closer towards the ships centre line in
order to clear the bilge. An often used position is the corner against the
engine room bulkhead.
